History of Cymbalta
Cymbalta the brand name for Duloxetine, which is a serotonin–norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) that was first created by Eli Lilly. The first documented discovery of duloxetine dates back to 1988, and in 2001 Eli Lilly filed with the Food and Drug Administration to register their new drug. It received approval for the treatment of depression on September 4, 2004, and then for the management/treatment of these additional health conditions on the following dates:
- Sept 7th 2004 – Neuropathic pain associated with diabetes
- Feb 26th 2007 – Generalized anxiety disorder
- Nov 30th 2007 – Major depressive disorder
- June 16th 2009 – Fibromyalgia
- Nov 5th, 2010 – Chronic musculoskeletal pain
Scientists are not entirely sure of the exact mechanism by which Cymbalta works. However, they believe it is related to the triggering of a change in serotonin and norepinephrine activity. It is also available in the United Kingdom for treating stress urinary incontinence. However, the possibility of liver toxicity side effects has prevented such approval within the United States market.
Conditions That Cymbalta Treats
Duloxetine (i.e. Cymbalta) comes highly recommended by the American Society for Clinical Oncology, the German Interdisciplinary Association for Pain Therapy, the American Association for Neurology, and the European Federation of Neurological Societies for chemotherapy-induced neuropathy, fibromyalgia and attendant mood disorders, diabetic neuropathy, and other neuropathic states.
As an SNRI, Cymbalta affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause depression or anxiety. It can also alleviate the pain that is associated with fibromyalgia and neuropathy (in particular, diabetic peripheral neuropathy or DPN).
Side effects of taking Cymbalta may include (but are not limited to) skin rash or hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. 10-20% patients taking Cymbalta also report dizziness, sleepiness, insomnia, and/or nausea.
How to Get a Cymbalta Discount
If you have insurance and you take Cymalta, your health insurance will likely cover your copay once you meet your deductible. This copay is generally about $20 for a given prescription, though less expensive generics can cost as low as $10.
Without insurance, however, Cymbalta can be extremely expensive. Though the exact price will vary according to pharmacy, economic status and whether you buy a generic or the brand name Cymbalta, it will usually cost about $185 for a bottle of 20 mg pills in lieu of insurance coverage. Advocate My Meds are able to give a cymbalta discount to those who apply.
