The World’s Weirdest Medical Conditions

While many diseases are treatable and commonplace, there are a few diseases that will leave you in a state of disbelief. Whether it is just bad luck or a certain gene that becomes over-active, these conditions are as real as they are confounding. Even though science continues to grow at an exponential rate, our understanding of the conditions below do not.

Foreign Accent Syndrome

60 cases of foreign accent syndrome have been reported to date. Sufferers of this disease find themselves talking in a strange new dialect/accent for no explainable reason. In 2002, scientists at Oxford University observed that people that had the condition also shared the same abnormalities in the brain, which led to changes in accent, speech pitch, vowel sound length, and other speech changes.

Alice in Wonderland Syndrome

This condition, also known as micropsia, can affect the senses of hearing, touch, and perception of one’s own body. This disease is named after Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and the condition is characterized by substantial changes in depth perception and intense migraines. It is a well-docume

nted fact that Carroll suffered from migraines, which may have inspired much of his work. Sufferers of this disease perceive objects as being far smaller than they actually are.

Pica

Named after the Latin name for the magpie, this disease makes sufferers of pica syndrome eat anything. Pregnant women and children are almost always the ones afflicted by this disease and sufferers can be found eating non-edible substances such as glass, paint, ceramics, dirt, raw rice, salt, flour, plaster, plastics, and other household materials. According to the National Organization for Rare Disorders, experts have not found a cure or a cause for this disease.

Porphyria

Suffered by 18th century English King George III, Mary Queen of Scots, Vincent Van Gogh, and King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, this disease is characterized by a purple coloring of one’s urine and feces. Porphyria causes problems with the production and distribution of ‘heme’, which is a protein vital to the nervous system, red blood cells, and skin health.

Fatal Familial Insomnia

This is a rare genetic disorder that causes death within 18 months or less, with no known cure or cause. Initially, this disease strikes with worsening sleeplessness and insomnia, until total insomnia is reached a few weeks later. Unable to fall asleep, the sufferers of this disease physically and mentally deteriorate.

CIPA (Congenital Insensitivity to Pain with Anhidrosis)

People with CIPA cannot feel pain. This means they don’t know when to urinate and they can’t feel a hot stove. Suffers from this disease usually injure themselves in ways that normal people do not. They can only tell if they’ve been injured when they see blood or an injury. The other part of this disease is Anhidrosis, which prevents the body from sweating. This can often result in a patient dying of over-heating.
