The Dos and Don’ts of Chickenpox

A sick child taking rest

Varicella, commonly known as chickenpox, is an infectious disease that has been declining over the years. However, some people, such as newborn babies, pregnant women, and HIV patients, are at a higher risk of contracting it.

Chickenpox is normally observed in children and can be very uncomfortable. If you are a parent seeking help with prescription assistance programs for chickenpox or other medical conditions, reach out to Advocate My Meds.

Here are some of the dos and don’ts of Chickenpox that help with pain relief and stop the infection from spreading to others:

Dos

1. Use Calming Lotions

Since chickenpox is a viral disease, it’s important to note that antibiotic creams or oils do not treat it. They can even aggravate the lesions and cause more skin rashes. The application of calamine lotion helps treat the itch.

2. Eat Healthy Food

It is important to eat specific foods while dealing with chickenpox. Soft foods include mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, boiled chicken, beans, and lentils, as well as scrambled eggs. Cool foods like yogurt, milkshakes, and smoothies are nutritious and beneficial during chickenpox.

3. Stay Hydrated

It’s important to stay hydrated to detox your body. Increase your fluid intake and avoid sugary drinks and caffeine to avoid dehydration. Other liquids like coconut water and electrolyte infused drinks are also good.

Don’ts

1. Don’t Scratch Lesions

Scratching can lead to a worsened infection and lesions becoming wounds. To prevent children from scratching their lesions, regularly apply calamine lotion or other cooling gels.

2. Don’t Use Ibuprofen

Ibuprofen and Aspirin can cause inflammation in some cases. In young children, it can also cause Reye’s Syndrome. This is a rare disorder that attacks organs, especially the liver and brain.

3. Don’t Send Your Child to School

It’s important to keep your child at home as chickenpox spreads rapidly in children. Once the lesions have healed completely and scraped off, you can send your child back to school.
