Suffered by 18^th century English King George III, Mary Queen of Scots, Vincent Van Gogh, and King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, this disease is characterized by a purple coloring of one’s urine and feces. Porphyria causes problems with the production and distribution of ‘heme’, which is a protein vital to the nervous system, red blood cells, and skin health.

Fatal Familial Insomnia

This is a rare genetic disorder that causes death within 18 months or less, with no known cure or cause. Initially, this disease strikes with worsening sleeplessness and insomnia, until total insomnia is reached a few weeks later. Unable to fall asleep, the sufferers of this disease physically and mentally deteriorate.

CIPA (Congenital Insensitivity to Pain with Anhidrosis)

People with CIPA cannot feel pain. This means they don’t know when to urinate and they can’t feel a hot stove. Suffers from this disease usually injure themselves in ways that normal people do not. They can only tell if they’ve been injured when they see blood or an injury. The other part of this disease is Anhidrosis, which prevents the body from sweating. This can often result in a patient dying of over-heating.
