History
Zetia was approved by the FDA in 2002. In 2004 it teamed up with simvastatin to produce a new product called Vytorin and was advertised for over a billion in sales for the combined products. A two-year study showed that the combination product was no better than simvastatin alone in decreasing the growth rate of plaque in the carotid arteries causing the sales of Zetia to go down.
How it Works
Zetia is used by those who are on statin but are not achieving their cholesterol goal. Zetia is used with statin and proven to reduce cholesterol. Although it mainly works with the liver, it has not been proven to prevent heart attacks or heart disease.
When used, Zetia works in the digestive tract and treats two sources of cholesterol. Results vary through individuals, but studies have shown adding Zetia to statin medicine has lowered LDL cholesterol by 25%.
Another study was conducted on people who were prescribed Zetia but were not taking statins. Their cholesterol lowered an average 18%.
Zetia medication will only work on a healthy diet. Eating fatty and high cholesterol foods will counteract the prescription. A rare side effect may be unexplained muscle pain or weakness. It is rare, but if it happens, it should be reported right away.
Other Statistics
It can take up to two weeks for the prescription to start working. One of the rare side effects can be pain or muscle weakness. An overdose is not proven to create serious life threats.
