Get Help Paying for Proventil
Albuterol or Salbutamol, also known by its brand name Proventil, is a medication used to treat asthma, bronchitis, and other similar breathing disorders. While these problems can include shortness of breath, it is not to be used to treat sudden breathing attacks. It is one of the most important medications in existence, and has even been recognized by the World Health Organization in their List of Essential Medicines. Nevertheless, thousands of uninsured, underinsured or financially unable patients in the United States struggle to pay for it year after year.
What is is used for?
Another name is albuterol which is a bronchodilator. A bronchodilator is designed to relax the muscles in the airway. This will allow the air flow in the lungs to increase. The inhaler can be used to treat two different problems. The first is to treat and prevent bronchospasm in those with reversible obstructive airway disease. The second is to help prevent bronchospasm that is exercise induced.

This drug, which is commonly manufactured and distributed as as salbutamol sulfate, is sold as an inhaler called Pro-Air by the Israeli pharmaceutical company Teva. Proventil is the brand name of an orally-administered form of salbutamol, which the US company Schering-Plough manufactures.
Proventil and all other forms of salbutamol sulfate have consistently made the World Health Organization’s biennial “List of Essential Medicines,” which they believe should be available in all health-conscious societies. As of April 2015, salbutamol is one of 5 essential antiasthmatics and medications for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Despite its significance, most major insurance providers do not cover Proventil.
Using Proventil
In addition to COPD, asthma and other respiratory disorders, it can and has also been used for:
- Muscle relaxation during premature labor
- The treatment of acute hyperkalemia
- Spinal muscular atrophy
- Cystic fibrosis
Nevertheless, some of these uses are preliminary and unapproved, and others have been replaced by more effective treatments.
When using any form of salbutamol, adverse effects can include (but may not be limited to) cramps, tremors, headaches, and dry mouth. If you experience any unwanted or unexpected symptoms while using it, it is imperative that you consult with your prescribing physician as soon as possible.
